The 16th London Turkish Film Festival began Thursday evening with the world premier of Çağan Irmak’s “Prensesin Uykusu” (Sleeping Princess) at the Empire Leicester Square in London.
The opening gala night was attended by a selected audience, including Turkish Ambassador to London Ünal Çeviköz, a high ranking official from the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Abdurrahman Çelik, Turkish actor Şener Şen, film and theater star Genco Erkal and director Irmak.
Legendary Turkish actor Şen was presented with the Golden Wings Lifetime Achievement Award while Semih Kaplanoglu’s film “Bal” (Honey) was presented with the Golden Wings Digiturk Digital Distribution Award. The film was also given $30,000 distribution contract award. The film’s director of photography, Barış Özbiçer, received the award on behalf of Kaplanoğlu.
The London Turkish Film Festival will continue until Nov. 18.
Among the films that will be shown at the festival are Semih Kaplanoglu’s “Yumurta” (Egg), “Süt” (Milk), Ferzan Özpetek’s “Serseri Mayınlar” (Loose Cannons) and Özgür Uyanik’s “Resurrecting the Street Walker.”
As well as the films that will compete for the grand prize at the festival, there will be selected new films in the festival program. All films in the festival will be voted by the audience and the most popular film will be given the People’s Choice Award.
Also, following the screenings, the audience will have a chance to meet with directors and artists. The 15-day festival will also continue to support new talents by screening Selda Çiçek’s first film, “İncir Çekirdeği” (Not Worth a Fig), and “Kars Öyküleri” (Tales from Kars), which brings six directors together.
London’s Apollo Theater and Dalston’s Rio Theatre will also host Turkish films during the two-week-long event.
